‘Socialism lights up certain once hopeless evils in human affairs and shows the path by which escape is possible, but it leaves that path rugged and difficult. Socialism is hope, but it is not assurance.’

New Worlds for Old was one of several books about the socialist future written by H. G. Wells when he was attempting to reform the Fabian Society. In it, Wells provided what he believed to be the key tenets of socialism and debunked some common arguments against it. The book was hugely influential on British socialists during Wells’ time and was praised by many British intellectuals.

Herbert George Wells, commonly known as H. G. Wells, was a British writer and one of the most famous science fiction writers in the world. Although he is best remembered today for his science fiction works, he was also famous during his time for his many social and political commentaries.
